FRANKFORT, Ky. -- With fall just around the corner, state foresters are encouraging Kentuckians to plan their tree-planting activities now by ordering tree seedlings through the Kentucky Division of Forestry. Nearly 50 species including white pine, baldcypress, black walnut, white oak, yellow-poplar, dogwood, redbud and many more are available by calling toll free 1-800-866-0555. Order forms are also available on-line at http://forestry.ky.gov.
The trees are available as bare-root seedlings in bundles of 10 or 100 and range in price from $24 to $45 per bundle. The seedlings are lifted at two state tree nurseries in Marshall and Morgan counties and delivered at your request from winter to early spring. Seedlings are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, therefore it is advised to place orders as soon as possible.
Seedlings are sold each year by KDF for use in reforestation, wildlife habitat development, erosion control, windbreaks and other conservation projects. Through the state’s reforestation efforts, over 90,000 acres of Kentucky’s forestland exists today in one acre blocks or larger as a direct result of KDF seedlings. Additionally, over 41,500 acres of Kentucky’s land has been permitted for mine reclamation with a post mine use of hardwood forest.
For specific information about the availability of various tree species and their prices, contact the KDF toll free at 1-800-866-0555 or visit KDF’s website at http://forestry.ky.gove/statenurseriesandtreeseedlings/Pages/default.aspx.
