A concert featuring the Madison Area Community Band will be held at the Bedford Elementary School on Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m.

The band, directed by former Trimble County High School band instructor Mark Johnson, includes several Trimble County and Madison residents and one member each from Henry and Switzerland counties.

“We have fun,” Johnson said of the band members. “We use these concerts as a way to promote music among young people.”

The B.E.S. concert is being held in collaboration with current Trimble band director Matt Leedy who is among the Trimble residents who are members of the community band.

“We are especially inviting students who will be going into the fifth grade next year to come to the concert,” Johnson said. “We will encourage them to come down and talk with some of the older people in the community band about what’s involved in playing a band instrument and how playing music can influence your life.”

Johnson said the band started in August with eight pieces and has grown to include 32 members. The oldest is 85 years of age. The youngest member is in the seventh grade in Madison’s school system.
The community band was awarded a $500 grant by the Madison Community Foundation last week for the purchase of additional instruments, Johnson said.

There is no charge to attend the concert. The public is invited.
