The staff of Jefferson Community and Technical College’s Trimble County Adult Education program wishes to thank several individuals and area businesses for generous contributions to our Christmas drawing.
To date, we have received donations from: Kathy McKown, Steve and Rita Tharp, Trimble County Farm Bureau, Bobby and Joann True, Rand Insurance, Randy Stevens, Kirby Melvin, D.H. Scott, Farmers Bank of Milton, Subway of Bedford, Linda Riley, Little Town and Country, The Trimble Banner, Morgan Drug Store, Hometown Pizza Bedford, Subway of Milton, Bedford Stop N Go, Bedford Loan and Deposit Bank, and our own staff members.
This program has provided free educational services for the community since 2004 at the same location – at the location of 1029 U.S. 421, Bedford, Ky., behind Trimble County High School. Free services include preparation for the GED (General Educational Diploma), English as a Second Language, skills upgrades for today’s workplace needs, the opportunity to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate through ACT/Work Keys assessments, and college transitional assistance for out-of-school adults.
Trimble’s poverty rate is 14.7 percent and unemployment rate is 13.4 percent; added to the lack of public transportation, these create obstacles that may seem defeating to adults who want to provide for their families and improve their situations.
Our main purpose in seeking donations was to work with the community to offer incentives and moral support for these dedicated students. Many hours of hard work are required of most of these students to reach their goals.
Once a student reaches an established milestone, his or her name is put into the drawing. Students must meet certain eligibility requirements to receive prizes. We hope this program also helps to recruit new students and retain current ones, so that we may continue to offer these services for free in the county.
We invite all contributors, current students and prospective students to attend our Christmas Party from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16. Trimble County school nurse Sheryl Teague will speak at 11 a.m.; door prizes will be drawn afterward.
Refreshments will be served throughout the day. We plan to hold another drawing in May from funds already donated. Donations are still needed; to contribute, or for more information, call us at (502) 255-9191.
