Bedford Elementary School’s fourth and fifth graders will learn how cool life can be when you make healthy choices when the Donate Life Kentucky Coalitions brings their fun and interactive “Life Is Cool” program to campus on Wednesday May 16th.
“Life Is Cool” is a program designed for upper elementary students, introducing them to the topic of organ and tissue donation and transplantation while reinforcing what they learn through their school’s health curriculum about basic anatomy and making healthy choices. Students visit hands-on activity stations that teach them how the body’s organs and tissues function, the importance of a healthy diet and the miracle of organ transplantation. Students listen to their own heartbeat, examine pig organs, compare the fat and sodium content of foods and experience what it’s like to suffer from corneal blindness.
Participating teachers are provided with a “Life Is Cool” manual so they can use selected stations and activities in their own classroom. Schools, hospitals and community organizations can also utilize all of the stations and activities to organize multi-class or multi-school events, like the event being planned for May 16th.
“The ‘Life Is Cool’ program provides a unique opportunity to impact students’ attitudes and knowledge on the importance of healthy choices,” explained Charlotte Wong, “Life Is Cool” coordinator. “We hope this program will instill a more positive attitude and sense of responsibility toward healthy living in these young lives.”
